Developing Providence Pointe
A new, 142-unit multi-family development, along with community facilities, will be constructed on the “Taft Homes” site and provide quality, safe and affordable housing in the Peoria community.
1952
“Taft Homes” was originally built in 1952 as temporary housing for returning Korean War Veterans. Since that time, the property had not seen major capital improvements, and the dense barrack style housing is no longer functional. The site consisted of 27 residential buildings and one management building, all of which will be demolished and replaced with a mix of residential buildings, community buildings and outdoor community space.
2019
Discussions regarding the redevelopment of “Taft Homes” started as early as 1996, when some units were demolished. Over the past 20+ years, various redevelopment plans have been discussed and worked on with the residents and the Peoria community. In July 2019, under CEO Jackie L. Newman’s administration and recommendation, the PHA Board of Commissioners approved and entered into an Early Start Agreement with Bear Development, who has extensive experience and has partnered with multiple Illinois housing authorities to utilize LIHTC to rehabilitate and/or demolish and construct new affordable housing communities. We are pleased that the collective experience and strong partnership between the PHA and Bear has resulted in the successful award of 9% LIHTC.
